Our Services

RTBD is well equipped having modern apparatus and machines for radiological (X-ray), endoscopic, ultrasound and laboratory investigations in order to make high quality TB diagnosis and differentiate diagnosis from other pathologies. There is modern fibro-bronchoscope “OLIMPUS” in the endoscopic room and approximately 400 patients are investigated for different respiratory disorders to put true diagnosis yearly. There are also rooms for physiotherapy and inhalation equipped with all necessary apparatus.

All TB patients are treated according DOTS programme (Directly observed treatment short-course) which includes 4-5anti-tuberculosis drugs of the first line and lasts for 6-8 months.

All new pulmonary TB patients and patients with chronic forms of lung TB and patients with extra-pulmonary TB can also receive anti-tuberculosis treatment (the intensive/initial phase of DOTS) in proper departments up to smears conversion.

In 2006 the special DR (drug-resistant) Unit was opened in RTBD. This 90 bedded department is capitally renovated with financial help of “Global Fund for Fighting Against AIDS, TB and Malaria” in 2009 and is intended for patients suffering from drug-resistant TB, i.e. for patients expectorating strains of M. tuberculosis resistant to main anti-tuberculosis drugs (isoniazid, rifampicin and others).This category of patients is treated by DOTS-plus programme using anti-tuberculosis drugs of the second  (reserve) line which is financed and supported by some international organizations. The duration of this treatment is 18-24 months. Up to now the DOTS-plus treatment programme is on a pilot stage.

There is a Lung Surgical Unit for patients with pulmonary TB which needs surgical intervention in RTBD. The consultant of this unit is the Head Thoracic Surgeon of Armenia, PHD O. Sarkavagyan. 338 TB patients were treated in 2008 in this unit. Now this department is in the process of major renovation after which it will be equipped with modern apparatus and instruments.

RTBD has a Resuscitation/Intensive Therapy Department where patients with complicated forms of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary TB and also patient s after surgical interventions receive qualified help.

The modern operative interventions on genitourinary organs are performed in Genitourinary Department in order to diagnose and manage patients with genitourinary TB (TB of kidneys, cyst formations, adenomas, testis removal, bladder TUR-biopsy, cystic plastic repairs, operations on for renal calculi, etc.). The consultant of this unit is MD, PHD and Prof. A. A. Tsaturyan.

Patients with extra-pulmonary TB suffering from TB of CNS (TB meningitis, brain TB, etc.), skeletal TB, gastrointestinal TB, TB of mesenteric lymph nodes, TB of peripheral lymph nodes and other TB localizations have possibility to receive high quality management including restoration of destructed vertebral bodies with auto-transplantation using auto-grafts (bone grafts, etc.) in Extra-pulmonary TB Unit. In 2008 there were 131 operations performed in this department.

RTBD also has separated Pediatric Department for children having different forms of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary TB including TB meningitis from all regions of Armenia. The medical stuff of this unit has high qualification and 2 of 3 pediatricians have scientific degree of PHD. This unit has also 8-graded general (secondary) school for sick students receiving anti-tuberculosis treatment for a long time.

There is separate department in RTBD for patients with pulmonary TB and mental disorders.

During the treatment in RTBD all patients receive full-bodied nourishment 3 times a day, according the accepted standards, but patients in Mental Department – 4 times daily. The diagnosis, treatment and nourishment in RTBD are free.
